Services and Products
Digital Hydraulics provides various services, and products
to wave modellers. An important category of services are the
courses provided by DHH to both beginning and advanced
SWAN users.
A separate page treats new and extended products.
Some of the services to wave modelling in general are:
-
assistance in setting up of wave modelling studies in coastal seas
and nearshore areas.
-
assistance in reporting, in particular
interpretation of results and comparison with measurements.
In particular DHH provides extensive support for SWAN users:
- installation of SWAN on clients computer system or, alternatively,
training of personnel that will install SWAN,
- implementation of SWAN for applications in specific geographic areas or,
alternatively, training of personnel that will implement the model,
- training of personnel that will operate SWAN for applications
in specific geographic areas.
Digital Hydraulics assists such operation of SWAN, either from a distance
(electronic communication) or hands-on (on location with client),
- training of personnel that will interpret and
report the computational results of SWAN,
- trouble-shooting in the above installation,
implementation, operation, interpretation and reporting.

Products
Furthermore DHH developed a number of products to enhance the quality
and efficiency of wave modelling. Most of these are part of the SWAN support
package, viz.
-
SWAN (equivalent to version 40.72 by Delft University of Technology)
extended with graphics options, allowing users to produce
sophisticated graphics directly from SWAN.
This extension of SWAN
comes with a hyperlinked manual which connects
directly to the user manual of Delft University.
-
A graphical user interface
for SWAN to assist inexperienced users.
-
A hyperlinked SWAN course,
bridging the gap between the text books on wave dynamics
and the user manual of SWAN. It treats subjects like the choice of the computaitonal
grid, how to obtain boundary conditions, how to prevent errors and many other subjects.
-
A post-processing package OPGraph producing graphs
from numerical SWAN output, including
the spectral files and the files containing values of the source terms.
In order to enhance the quality of SWAN itself (not just the graphics extension)
DHH developed
a comprehensive set of over 150 tests to check the correct operation
of the computer model, including input/output, boundary conditions,
error procedures etc.
Every time Delft University publishes a new version of SWAN DHH undertakes
to check the correct working of the program.
Finally a pre- and post-processing package called
ARCADIA enables users to
carry out sensitivity analysis, calibration and error propagation studies
with SWAN and other models.

Courses
DHH can provide training in the use of SWAN, both for inexperienced and advanced
users.
The subject matter of the course can be chosen with the client.
Possible subjects of courses are the following:
- choice of computational area and spectral domain; when use nested models,
when use one-dimensional models, when use nonstationary models?
- data collection: how to obtain bathymetric data, meteorological data,
incident wave fields.
- how to decide what is important and what is not; the use of sensitivity
analysis.
- Validation/Verification: check the performance of the model
in the present situation.
- Calibration: determine the values of unknown coefficients.
- Presentation of results; if desired an introduction into the post-processing
package OPGraph is included.
- What to do in case of errors, or in situations where the modeller
does not entirely trust the results.
SWAN has quite a number of analysis options; it is important to the
advanced modeller to know these options.
- Probabilistic approach in the use of SWAN; introduction into the use
of ARCADIA.
